Good news for Sandyford with eircom’s Ultra Fast Broadband
Tokyo, 16th June 2010
Communications Minister Eamon Ryan today welcomed the announcement by eircom of its €20 million ultra-fast broadband trials. The open access trials will deliver speeds of up to 150Mb per second, to 10,000 residential and business customers in Sandyford in Dublin and Wexford Town.
Speaking from Japan where he is meeting with broadband and ICT companies, Minister Ryan said, “This is great news for Sandyford, which will undoubtedly enhance the area’s ability to attract new investment and new business opportunities.
Ireland is making strides in broadband – in both speeds and supply – and this is being recognised internationally. With over 1.5 million people subscribing to broadband services and higher speeds becoming more widely available, we are no longer playing catch up.
This announcement from Eircom is yet another good news story for Irish customers. I wish Eircom success with these trials, another important step in the move to faster, cheaper broadband.”

Minister Ryan impressed by Tallaght School’s Use of Technology
Tuesday, 1st June 2010
On Friday last, Communications Minister Eamon Ryan visited St. Aidan’s Community School Brookfield, to see the CONNECT School project in action.
St. Aidan’s, in partnership with South Dublin County Council, has been taking part in CONNECT School which aims to develop student-centred technology in education, for the past three years.
A wireless network, laptops, data projectors and smart boards have been used in the school to focus learning on technology, alongside the traditional curriculum. Progress to date has shown that students are more engaged with their subjects and more enthusiastic in terms of participation.
Visiting the school, Minister Ryan said, “I’m glad to see the CONNECT School project has been so successful here in St. Aidan’s and that it’s had such a positive impact on both students and teachers.
The Government will continue to take an innovative approach to learning with technology, to create as many opportunities as possible for our children. It is important that we provide them with the skills, the knowledge and the confidence they will need in an increasingly technology-focused world.
With CONNECT and our other broadband projects, we are developing a new learning culture that reaches beyond the confines of the classroom.”

St. Colmcille’s Knocklyon, Garran Mhuire Goatstown and Our Lady’s Templeogue included in Programme
Dublin, 16th February 2010
Minister Eamon Ryan today welcomed the announcement of projects under the Government’s €579 million School Building Programme.
Three schools in the South Dublin area have been authorised to begin tender and construction (where full planning permission secured) or prepare tender documentation (where planning permission sought). All schools will have works carried out this year, or early next year.
The following schools have been included:
St. Colmcille’s Junior and Senior National School Knocklyon – prepare tender documentation for new school building
Garran Mhuire Primary School, Goatstown – begin construction on new school building
Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templeogue – begin extension and refurbishment of existing building
“Having visited both St. Colmcille’s and Garran Mhuire in Goatstown”, said the Minister, “I was acutely aware of the need for new school buildings.
I am delighted that these schools can now advance to tender and construction respectively and have new buildings in place as soon as possible.
There is an increasing demand for school places in the South Dublin area. This funding, with the extension of Our Lady’s in nearby Templeogue, will ensure that students have access to a school in their locality, as well as to state-of-the-art facilities.
The Green Party secured significant resources for the Education Budget in the renewed Programme for Government negotiations we held last October. I am glad to see that this commitment to our school system is being borne out in the Capital programme for this year.”
This School Building Programme will provide 23,500 school places in 20 new schools and 32 extensions nationwide.
Minister Ryan impressed by South Dublin’s Young Scientists
DUBLIN, 25th January
At the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition in the RDS last week, Minister Eamon Ryan had an opportunity to meet with students from second-level schools in his constituency.
He was particularly impressed by the projects submitted from Our Lady’s Grove, Loreto College and St. Colmcille’s Community School.
“With this year’s entries, I think the students have displayed a real understanding of where our country is going”, said the Minister.
“They focused on economics, education and green technologies among other areas. The standard was remarkable and as well as being informative, the projects were entertaining.
An exciting future lies ahead for these Young Scientists and I wish them all the very best in their endeavours.”
New Development Plans repeat mistakes of the past – Minister Eamon Ryan
Motions are being proposed by councillors in Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown planning to re-zone 33 acres at Fernhill Estate to a residential area. The current zoning would protect the rural amenity and provide for the development of agriculture. This could result in 660 houses near Three Rock Mountain near Stepaside.
Minister Ryan responded to these motions saying that “it is clear the councillors have learned nothing from the property and planning bubbles of the past.
The political parties seem also seem willing to provide for major new retailing developments at a time when existing shopping centres cannot generate enough business.
This kind of thinking shows that some parties have not learned from the mistakes of the past and, worse still, they are determined to repeat them. We cannot let this happen.
I would urge constituents to make their views known to the councillors in question. I will be contacting the County Manager to explain the folly of this plan and ask have we learned nothing from bad planning and burst bubbles?
The people of Dublin South are not being served by such representation at this important level of Government”
