I’ve been getting an increasing number of calls from concerned individuals about mobile phone scams in relation to the download of ringtones, games, phone “wallpapers” and other services. I think we’ve all heard stories of people who have inadvertently subscribed to a text message or phone service that either wipes out phone credit, or results in exorbitant bills. Young people and the elderly are particularly vulnerable and this cannot be allowed to continue. While the majority of these premium rate service operators contribute positively to the economy, with legitimate competitions, and weather services for example, there are a small few who essentially scam the customer.

For this reason, I’m pushing through new legislation where the companies, who are involved in deliberate scams, will be fined up to €250000 or have their licences revoked.
