Broadband improvements

In July this year, we published our Next Generation Networks policy paper, which sets out the action I’m taking to further improve Ireland’s broadband, in terms of infrastructure, availability and speeds. The National Broadband Scheme is well underway, and is bringing broadband to up to a quarter of a million premises nationwide. We are making progress. Tunnels owned by ESB, Irish Rail and the National Roads Authority will soon be opened up, so that broadband companies can deliver their services to more people, in more parts of the country. All new buildings and roads will have to have broadband infrastructure as a matter of course, and we’re further enhancing our international links, with the Project Kelvin transatlantic cable. This project is a major undertaking, which will directly link us to the US and Europe, speeding up connections, and helping local businesses compete on the international market.
