Broadcasting Act

I recently published the Broadcasting Act 2009. This is the most comprehensive broadcasting legislation in almost 50 years in Ireland. It looks at the whole regulatory system in relation to the industry, but also introduces some very practical measures that directly affect the audience. It changes at the television licensing system, to ensure that court appearances for non-payment are soon a thing of the past. It allows for increased funding of Irish film and television projects, and the independent broadcasting sector. It also sets out an advertising code, which restricts the advertising of junk food, and foods high in salt and sugar, to our children. The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has been appointed, as well as the Board of RTE and for the first time, all sides of the Oireachtas will present nominations for membership.
